Population size at 1 December 2004 was equal to 47 million 318 thousand people. During the 2003 year amount of population was decreased on 0,8% (381 thousand people).

The modern tendencies in demographic development of Ukraine are characterized by a set of factors - stabilization of birth rate and mortality level, decrease of child and mother mortality, population aging and worsening of population health. The levels of birth rate is one of the lowest, child mortality and divorses - one of the highest in the Europe. Die twice more than born.

Ukraine had the population about 52.2 millions and was the sixth biggest country of Europe at the moment of independence. Since 1993 population of the country has decreased on 4.6 million persons (9.7%) during 11 years. It is not complex to forecast what will be the amount of population if it will decrease on almost half a million every year. It's also clear now that significant aging of population will lead to increase of demographic loading on the working population.

Today Ukraine stands on a threshold of deep demographic crisis, after which will be impossible to restore todays numbers of population. Unfortunately at government level is not paid needed attention to this problems solution. Sucesses of economic transformations are not possible without resolute actions in socio-demographic sphere. With each year this problem becomes more actual for future of the Ukraine.

What should be done to suspend the movement to demographic crisis and what problems are most sharp for society, where demographic development of the country is going and - those problems waits for the specialist's answer - and not only demographers. We propose to unite our efforts to work out and approve a laws, to lobby complex programs of social-demographic development and to elaborate paramount actions, which should be done to save population of Ukraine from demographic crisis.
